Member Spotlight - February 2006 Four members of NKAIW have nominated and have the distinct honor of presenting Lorene Friedman as the Spotlight Member for February 2006.From the Nominators: 1) She joined NKAIW in 1996 and has been a driving force for good ever since. She has held every office on the local level except treasurer, and has served on or chaired every committee. She was voted Insurance Woman of the Year for 2003 – 2004 and received the very first NKAIW President’s Award. She was the driving force behind NKAIW’s website and continues as their Webmaster. She has also taken an active part in the state association. She served as the KSAIW Public Relations Chair, served as Assistant to the State Director and went on to become State Director for 2004 – 2005. KSAIW now has its own website for which she serves as the Webmaster. She makes sure that information also gets passed on to the Region IV website. For her contributions to KSAIW on the website and her willingness to serve in whatever capacity she was needed, she was given the AAMGA Award for 2005. At the regional level she has also been always ready to serve! She was Banquet Chairman for Regional 2002, served as alternate to the regional nominating committee, and for 2005 – 2006 has served as Assistant to the RVP. She definitely is reaching beyond the horizon to achieve her dreams and is always available to give you a little nudge to help you reach yours, too! If you need help of any kind, just say the word and she will come up with an idea to solve your problem. I am in awe of her abilities and have the utmost respect for her ideals, but more than that, I call her one of my dearest friends. By
Peggy Eubanks, ARA, ACS, CPIW 2) Lorene is the kind of person every organization wants and should have. She is almost driven to make her local and state associations the best they can be. She may come across a little gruff on the outside but on the inside, those that know her know she is a beautiful person with the best interest of all in mind. She is dedicated to her family, her job and her friends. We appreciate her for her commitment, her involvement and the time she takes each month to make our group just a little bit better. I / we are pleased to call her friend. By
Steve Westmeyer, AIC, SCLA, RPA 3)
She has designed logos and covers for our meeting programs. After
spending many hours communicating with different Kentucky officials
she finally accomplished one of her many goals by receiving permission
from the Governor’s office for use of the "Kentucky Unbridled
Spirit” logo. Thanks to this Lady KSAIW is one of the first in
Kentucky to receive this permission from the Governor's office.
They are now asking others in the State to use it. I too am in awe of her abilities and creativity. I also have the utmost respect for her ideals, but more than that, she is one of my dearest friends. By
Martha Woodside 4) I met Lorene about fifteen years ago when she and I both worked at Sears. She was my supervisor and I think we both learned quickly that we are very hardheaded, stubborn and untactful in expressing our opinions. But this was the beginning of a long friendship that didn’t include just us but our better halves, mothers, children, and even the dog and cat. She entered into the insurance business at a very hard time in her life. Her husband John was terminally ill and in the hospital. At that time, I was working at Roeding Insurance and suggested to her that maybe she would like to work there too. I talked to my manager, Dan Scherff, and he called her for an interview. When he hired her, he made a point to let me know he hired her because HE liked her not because she was my friend. Shortly after coming to work for Roeding, her husband John passed away. This was hard for Fred and I both because we lost a very dear friend. The four of us and Lorene’s mom had spent many hours together doing whatever the plan for the weekend was, driving around the country side on a sunny afternoon, going out to eat or making a meal in one of our homes. He became our missing link because we weren’t the foursomes any more. I miss him very much still. After John passed away I thought it would be a good time to get Lorene to join NKAIW. I talked her into going to a meeting and the rest is history. She has not slowed down since. She has worn many hats in our local chapter of NKAIW from secretary to president. On the state level she has been state director and I know something else and she will kill me for not remembering, but that is me and she accepts that. She has co-chaired the 2002 regional conference in Kentucky and is now the assistant to Mary Stafford, the current RVP. She can quote the bylaws at the drop of a hat. Don’t ever try to outwit, outlast, or outplay her on them, you will lose. Lorene has always been the type of person who wants it done and she wants it done now. She is creative and a perfectionist and did I mention impatient? She has always been passionate about our organization and gets upset with anyone who does not have the same desire and drive. (She will deny this, but it is my story and I am sticking to it). Lorene has two daughters, Kim and Michelle. Kim is a mortgage broker, resides in California and attended last year’s regional conference with us. Michelle is an employee of Roeding Group Companies and is also a member of NKAIW. Both are family to me. She has one granddaughter Logan, two grandsons, Anthony and Jonathan. One is a US Marine and the other is attending the police academy to become a police officer like his father. Our friendship has gone down many paths. We argue with each other, (stubborn), we debate politics, (hard headed); we agree not to argue about religion, we love each other, we hate each other some days, doesn’t last too long. We have shared joys, (my grandbabies, my son being a pilot for the Air Force, her grandbabies, her buying her first home as a widow). We have shared sorrow, (her husband John, her son Michael and her mother Juanita passing away, my mom going into a nursing home, my sister having dementia). But this is friendship of the best kind. All best friends have a saying between them. If you have a best friend you know what I am talking about. Ours is this: I may call and tell you to bring a gun and some money. So when we are having a hard time, we will ask each other: “Do you need money or a gun?” So far the answer we both give is no. No wonder I think we are the original “Thelma and Louise”. Those of you, who know us, know what I mean about “even the dog and cat”. The rest of you, we’ll let ponder that one. By
